SOUTHEAST ASIA TOBACCO CONTROL ALLIANCE: Mt. Samat now a shrine of smoke-free Philippines


Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance issued the following announcement on April 9.

During the commemoration of the Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) which marks the greatness of Filipino fighters during World War II, the marker declaring Mt. Samat National Shrine as a Shrine of Smoke-free Philippines was also launched. The marker was received by the Administrator of the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) Undersecretary Ernesto Carolina.

Present during the launch were Philippine Vice-President Leni Robredo, Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año, Second District of Bataan Representative Joet Garcia, SEATCA Smoke-free Program Manager Dr. Domilyn Villarreiz, Municipality of Pilar, Bataan Mayor Alice Pizzaro and other local chief executives of Bataan.

With support from the Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance (SEATCA) and the Smokefree Cities Asia Pacific Network – SCAN, the Municipality of Pilar, Bataan through the leadership of Mayor Pizzaro initiated the project to make Mt. Samat as a Shrine of Smoke-free Philippines. This project was also supported by the Office of the Second District of Bataan, PVAO, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NCHP), Mt. Samat Flagship Tourism Enterprise Zone (FTEZ), and the Tourism Infrastructure And Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA).
